How Alabama OC feels Tide’s new starting center performed against East Carolina

Racin Delgatty played his first game as a starting center for the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday against East Carolina.

The Cal Poly transfer officially became the second full-time starter at center for Alabama during the Kalen DeBoer era with the start. The Tide’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was asked how he felt Delgatty performed against the Pirates during his Monday press conference.

“Racin played well,” Grubb said. “I thought that he built momentum throughout the football game, and he’s one of the guys I thought had juice on the field, and played with some passions, some emotion, made some really good late calls, corrected a couple things at the line of scrimmage for us, that I thought made a big time difference. I’m still working on some of the consistent communication, needs to happen, and be even better, but I thought he played well, and honestly, I think he’s just going to keep getting better every single week.”

Delgatty was able to come in and put himself in position to be the Tide’s starting center in short order after transferring. Grubb described him as super athletic during fall camp.

“Racin is bigger than people think, he operates at over 300 pounds pretty consistently,” Grubb said. “I just always tell him he kind of looks like a retired surfer, he’s got a little bit of that going on. At first you’re kind of looking at him like ‘how big is this guy?’ but he’s got decent size. He’s super athletic though, and I think that’s the part we realized when we played, we realized he has the athleticism and the physicality to do this. Especially against our front, that kind of gives him the confidence and he knows he can do it.”

The center will have an opportunity to continue picking up momentum as a starter this fall when the Tide hits the road to play Kentucky on Saturday.
