Former Alabama DB stretchered off during Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe (3) is taken off the field on a stretcher during a college football game between Tennessee and Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, Ga., on Sept. 12, 2026.

On Saturday, former Alabama and current Georgia Tech cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe was taken off the field on a stretcher in the third quarter of the 45-24 loss to Tennessee.

Mbakwe collided with teammate Jordan Walker’s knee, and Mbakwe stayed down for several minutes. Also, Walker sustained a lower-body injury on this play.

Georgia Tech staff and players prayed for Mbakwe as medical personnel attached him to a stretcher. He was able to lift up one of his arms as he was taken off the field. Mbakwe was taken to a hospital

According to Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key, Mbakwe was responsive coming off the field. Key said this to reporters after the game, and he said he was going to go check on him immediately after the press conference’s conclusion.

Mbakwe posted on social media a few hours after the game, and he thanked everyone for the support. He also said this injury is a minor setback.
