Mississippi State HC Jeff Lebby tells what Bulldogs have to do to stop Keelon Russell

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell (12) yells at Alabama Crimson Tide tight end Kaleb Edwards (81) during a moment of confusion while playing Kentucky Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Alabama Crimson Tide is set to face a massive test on the road during week five of the 2026 campaign.

Keelon Russell will look to shine in Starkville against Mississippi State. The young quarterback was able to bounce back in his first road start following an underwhelming first half against Kentucky, and Russell will need to settle in as quickly as possible against a talented Bulldogs’ defense on Saturday.

Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby recently revealed his plan behind making Russell as uncomfortable as possible this weekend, as Lebby claims his defense will focus on applying constant pressure when the young quarterback looks to throw.

“We’re going to have to move him off the spot. We are going to have to do a great job of tackling, that’s going to be a huge piece of it,” Lebby said. “And he has, he’s played really, really well and been really productive. Explosive plays, he’s got great talent around him and so for us it’s going to be about applying pressure. Getting our fans really involved and really excited about what’s going on between those white lines.”

Russell recorded 188 passing yards and one touchdown in the first road start of his career against Kentucky. The sophomore threw two interceptions in the first half of the win over the Wildcats, but Russell was able to bounce back and thrive throughout the third and fourth quarter nonetheless.

Mississippi State will more than likely prove to be an excellent challenge for the rising star in Week 5, and Lebby appears to have numerous strategies in regard to making Russell uncomfortable on Saturday following his recent comments.
