Former Alabama defensive back DeVonta Smith will be transferring to Notre Dame. The news was reported by a number of people including On3’s Pete Nakos and 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Smith’s departure comes after his fourth season in Tuscaloosa. The native of Cincinnati, Ohio was a starter for the Crimson Tide during the 2024 season. He recorded 30 tackles, five pass deflections, and one forced fumble.
He was expected to be a key player in Alabama’s secondary next season, but that will no longer happen. Smith joins a Notre Dame football program that is trending in the right direction. The Fighting Irish are currently seeded as the No. 5 team in the College Football Playoff.
Smith has one year of eligibility remaining. He will likely go into South Bend and compete for a starting spot in the secondary. He was a player that improved over the course of the season for the Crimson Tide. His presence at the HUSKY position was huge over the course of the season for Alabama. Notre Dame lands one of the more promising defensive backs in the transfer portal and a player that plays with a lot of passion. He will find a way to make winning plays next season for Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish.
