Is an Alabama native prime for more playing time at WOLF LB in 2025?

Alabama linebacker Yhonzae Pierre (42) catches the ball during practice at Thomas-Drew Practice Fields in Tuscaloosa, AL on Friday, Aug 18, 2023.

One of the players that has kind of flown under the radar during his time at Alabama is redshirt sophomore Yhonzae Pierre. The native of Eufaula, Alabama has the potential to play a key role on Alabama’s defense in 2025. Where does the in-state product fit in at the WOLF position heading into the season?

In 2024, Pierre missed some time after suffering an elbow injury during the season. He still managed to play in 11 games for the Crimson Tide. He recorded six tackles and a pair of pass breakups.

With Alabama’s starting WOLF — Que Robinson headed to the NFL, someone will have to step in as the starter. Pierre will be in the mix to replace Robinson along with teammates Noah Carter, Justin Hill, and Qua Russaw. One of the things that could separate Pierre is his ability to effectively rush the passer. He has great bend and burst off the edge. Pierre is listed at 6-foot-3 and 239 pounds. Ideally, he needs to add 10-15 pounds of muscle weight.

If he is able to do so, he will increase his chances of being named a starter. Russaw became the starter following Robinson’s season-ending injury. It will be interesting to see what type of role Pierre carves out on defense if Russaw assumes the starting spot. Pierre is poised to be an impact player for the Crimson Tide next season.
