Alabama’s secondary looks to be much improved this season, after two years of being the weak link on defense. It failed to defend the deep ball, which resulted in huge plays.

Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss aren’t solid at quarterback for now, but there are five signal callers that are ready for Alabama. Yours truly of Touchdown Alabama Magazine has listed those five individuals.

 

5. Kyle Allen 

• Classification: Sophomore
• Size: 6-foot-3, 210 pounds
• Team: Texas A&M Aggies

Summary: Kyle Allen took the starting job away from Kenny Hill down the stretch last season. He completed 61.5 percent of his passes, and totaled 1,322 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Texas A&M finished 8-5 in 2014, but Allen’s performances against Auburn and West Virginia (AutoZone Liberty Bowl) delivered the Aggies to victory.

Alabama shutout Texas A&M 59-0 last season at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Allen completed two passes for three yards, and was constantly avoiding pressure. The Aggies look to return the favor, as the Crimson Tide will travel to Kyle Field in College Station, Texas this season.

Texas A&M returns a roster littered with talented receivers, including Edward Pope, Josh Reynolds, Ricky Seals-Jones. All three players are 6-foot-4 or taller.

 

4. Brandon Allen

• Classification: Senior
• Size: 6-foot-2, 210 pounds
• Team: Arkansas Razorbacks

Summary: He’s been through a few offensive coordinators, but Dan Enos has officially become the guy for Brandon Allen. Arkansas hired Enos on Jan. 22, 2015, and he’s brought a breath of fresh air to Allen’s confidence and mechanics as a passer.

The senior started putting things together last year with a solid performance.

Allen totaled 2,285 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. He completed just 49.6 percent his throws in 2013 with 13 touchdowns. Allen managed the game well, despite Arkansas’ 14-13 loss to Alabama in 2014.

He threw for 246 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

The Crimson Tide will host Arkansas at Bryant-Denny Stadium this season. The Razorbacks return Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams to its backfield. Tight end Hunter Henry and wide receivers Keon Hatcher, Jared Cornelius and Cody Hollister all return.

 

3. Joshua Dobbs 

• Classification: Junior
• Size: 6-foot-3, 216 pounds
• Team: Tennessee Volunteers

Summary: He backed up Justin Worley for much of last season, but Joshua Dobbs is the answer at quarterback for Tennessee. Dobbs started the last six games of 2014, accounting for 1,206 passing yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions on a 63.3 percent completion rating.

He held his own against Alabama on Oct. 25, 2014 at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.

Dobbs recorded 192 passing yards, 75 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Crimson Tide. Tennessee outscored Alabama 20-14 from the second quarter on out, but the Tide held on to win 34-20. The Volunteers return Marquez North, Pig Howard and Jason Croom.

 

2. Jeremy Johnson

• Classification: Junior
• Size: 6-foot-5, 230 pounds
• Team: Auburn Tigers

Summary: He’s appeared on many preseason All-American and All-SEC lists for good reasons. Auburn was held back in the passing game last season with Nick Marshall.

Jeremy Johnson presents the Tigers with a vertical passing attack. He has a big time arm and is very accurate with the football. Johnson’s totaled nine career touchdown passes, while completing 73.2 percent of his throws. Auburn will pound the ball with Roc Thomas, Jovon Robinson and Peyton Barber, but look for D’haquille Williams to stock up on receptions.

Auburn lost a heartbreaker to Alabama last season in a 55-44 shootout at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Tigers must develop a second option at wide receiver, but Johnson has all the physical tools and mechanics needed to command head coach Gus Malzahn’s offense.

 

1. Dak Prescott

• Classification: Senior
• Size: 6-foot-3, 230 pounds
• Team: Mississippi State Bulldogs

Summary: He’s arguably the most talented quarterback returning to the Southeastern Conference, and yet Dak Prescott continues to learn. Mississippi State’s head coach Dan Mullen took the podium at SEC Media Days and addressed Prescott’s improvement as a pocket passer.

The Bulldogs had a magical run last season, as Prescott navigated the team to a No.1 ranking heading into its matchup with Alabama. Mississippi State wins over LSU, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Auburn propelled Prescott as a favorite in the Heisman Trophy conversation.

A rough outing against the Crimson Tide brought him back to earth, but it also made Prescott hungry for this season. He tossed three critical interceptions in a 25-20 loss to Alabama.

Overall, Prescott put in good numbers in 2014. He collected 3,449 passing yards, 986 rushing yards, 41 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. A 10-3 finish is good, but Mississippi State wants an SEC championship. Media members picked the Bulldogs to finish last in the SEC West.

Prescott and company accepts the challenge, and are ready to roll. Alabama will have its ears rocked with cowbells as it travels to Starkville, Miss., in the Battle of Highway 82.

Prescott will have numerous wideouts to play with, headlined by junior De’Runnya Wilson.
