Steve Shaw: “Any coach entering the playing field to protest an officiating decision will be given an automatic Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty.”

Steve Shaw just started Day Two of SEC Media Days off with a bang. He dropped a new rule on the media members to the tune of an audible gasp.

The new rule creates a safer, more stable environment for the referees by not allowing head coaches to cross onto the playing field when arguing an ‘officiating decision.’ Many coaches – not just in the Southeastern Conference – are well known by their tirades, especially the likes of guys like Muschamp and Saban.

The official rule, as displayed by Steve Shaw Tuesday morning, looked as follows:

With this new rule set in place, the jobs of guys like Scot Cochran and other sideline managers that are responsible for keeping coaches on the sidelines just got a whole lot harder.

Late in games, this could absolutely change a game if a coach loser their discipline as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty is currently a 15-yard loss.

In addition, coaches can be disqualified and ejected should they receive two of these.
