Nick Saban is Undefeated Against Former Assistants, Will Jimbo Fisher Be the First?

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

A well-known story line heading into tonight’s primetime game between the Crimson Tide and the Seminoles makes for one crazy statistic.

Florida State head coach, Jimbo Fisher, was an offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at LSU before going on to win a national title for Tallahassee on his own. Throughout his coaching career, however, Nick Saban has never lost to a former assistant. This graphic appeared on ESPN’s College Gameday:

Tonight’s game is being heralded as one of the best season-openers in the history of college football. Those are big words to live up to. If anything, though, Jimbo Fisher has proven he has what it takes to win at the highest level of college football, a fact that definitely feeds into the hype surrounding this game.

Florida State is the most talented team Saban’s Crimson Tide has played in a regular season, out-of-conference game in years, possibly ever. This statistic is pretty awe-inspiring, but it will be on the line tonight in Atlanta. Can Jimbo Fisher and company be the first to break this streak?
