Pay for play is officially happening in college athletics.
According to the NCAA’s Board of Governors, a move has been made to support student-athletes profiting off their name, image and likeness.
In a meeting this week, the board ruled in favor of compensation for third-party endorsements related to and separate from athletics.
Also, the board supports others forms of compensation, such as social media, business that student-athletes have started and personal appearances that remain within the rules of what was discussed in October of 2019.
In terms of a timetable for adoption, the rules-making structure of the NCAA’s three divisions are taking this recommendation into consideration and each division is expected to adopt the new name, image and likeliness rule by January.

Compensation for student-athletes will take effect by the start of the 2021-22 academic year.
