Former Georgia player says the only reason Alabama got in 2023 CFP was ‘Nick Saban was about to retire’

The University of Georgia is still dwelling on not making the College Football Playoff last season.

Georgia was the two-time defending CFP National Champions before the 2023 campaign.

Kirby Smart’s group suffered a 24-27 defeat to the University of Alabama and missed out on the CFP. James Cook, a former Georgia running back, did a video for USA Today Sports last week. The 2021 CFP National Champion and Pro Bowl selection for the Buffalo Bills took a shot at the Crimson Tide with the reason he feels Alabama made the playoff last year.

“We [Georgia] were supposed to be in there this year,” Cook said.

“If Georgia is in the playoff this year, we win it all. They did not want to see us go back-to-back. We lost one game to Alabama in the SEC Championship and have not been beaten the whole season. It was like the same scenario my last year in college. We won every game and lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship, but we still got in and then went on to win it all. But, I just feel like they knew Nick Saban was going to retire so they tried to sneak him in one.”

Georgia was on pace to three-peat at national champions, but Alabama prevented it. Nick Saban did not leave the coaching ranks as a national champion, but at least he prevented Smart from holding a CFP National Championship for a third straight year.

The Bulldogs are steamed about it, but we will see how the matchup plays out next season at Bryant-Denny Stadium against Alabama.
