Ty Simpson is still the frontrunner in Alabama football’s quarterback competition as the summer moves along.

Alabama football’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb confirmed this was still the case Thursday during an interview with Ryan Fowler on Tide 100.9. Grubb made it clear Simpson was the leader after the spring when he stated Simpson would start if the Tide were playing an actual football game immediately after spring practice wrapped up. He shared why this was still the case while talking with Fowler.

“Ty took care of the football better,” Grubb told Fowler. “He operated better. I thought he improved for an older quarterback…As an older guy, especially towards the latter part of the spring, he really started to show more of those characteristics.”

The Alabama offensive coordinator also revealed this was communicated to Alabama’s quarterback room before it was revealed to the public.

“I was trying to answer that as honestly as I could,” Grubb said. “I knew that people were looking for direction and so were the guys in the room. Those were not surprising things. Those are things that we already had talked about with the guys. We had already had our post-spring evaluations done with the guys.”

Grubb continues to hammer home this competition is still an open one with him sharing the Tide still plans to let each guy compete.
