How many wolf linebackers will Alabama play in 2025?

Alabama football rotated Qua Russaw, Que Robinson and Yhonzae Pierre at its Wolf linebacker position in the early part of the 2024 season.

The Crimson Tide could have a similar rotation in 2025 with Russaw leading the way. Pierre is still expected to get some snaps, along with Jah-Marien Latham, who switched to the position after last season.

The wolf linebacker is a hybrid edge rusher and linebacker position within the Tide’s defense. The player in this position will be called upon to get after the quarterback, drop back in coverage and be strong against the run.

“I think we’d get a number of guys as we’ve talked about before that can go in and play for us,” Alabama’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack told reporters on Monday. “Obviously, you’ve got experienced players in Qua Russaw and Zebo (Jah-Marien) Latham. Yhonzae Pierre has done some tremendous things.”

Justin Hill and Noah Carter round out this group as its two youngest members. Wommack has seen flashes from them as of late.

”I’ve seen a lot of growth of maturity from him, but then also some younger players, right, like Justin Hill and Noah Carter, are doing some great things,” Wommack said. “It’s about building more consistency in their game, right? So they flash, but, you know, how consistent can they become that you feel confident that they can go out on any given play, any given down, and go execute at a high level, and those are the things that they’ll continue to push in that regard. But I would say those guys are on the right trajectory right now.”

The strength of this position is one of the reasons why the Tide is optimistic about their defense in 2025.
