Alabama’s defense needs to contain this Georgia wide receiver on Saturday

In last season’s meeting between Alabama and Georgia, the Crimson Tide saw an explosive receiving performance from Ryan Williams, but this year, the Bulldogs have a wide receiver that could possibly have the same type of big-play impact in the passing game against Alabama.

USC transfer Zachariah Branch is currently leading the Bulldogs in explosive plays, and he’s turned short passes into chunk plays resulting in first downs or scores.

On Hey Coach, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer highlighted Branch’s productivity so far this season for Georgia and what the Crimson Tide need to watch for on Saturday.

“They got a couple guys that are certainly an echelon above when it comes to the yards here early in the season,” DeBoer said. “You can see that there’s qualities that each of them bring to the table that are a little bit different. I think one of the highlighted ones is Branch, and he not only is a threat just even getting the ball to his hands and having him take off and run and he hit a big screen that was just a throw behind the line of scrimmage against Tennessee, took it to the house. He’s also a punter returner. Kick returner. They have those types of weapons… So, what we got to do is we got to do a good job with knowing the coverage. Knowing where our help is at. Anticipating with what we’ve seen so far. Be ready for something new. Be ready for those double moves and whatever it might be. But we got to rally to the ball, not just the person whose one-on-one with those guys, but the entire team. That’s what we got to do a great job of is just pursuit to get these guys down because they can break tackles, but as much as anything, they’re elusive and they have speed. They don’t even really give a lot of guys a chance to get their hands on you.”

In his first three games with Georgia, Branch has hauled in 11 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns. His best performance came last week against Tennessee as he finished with five receptions, 69 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion to help the Bulldogs force overtime.

Like DeBoer mentioned, Branch turned a screen into a 36-yard touchdown in Week 3, but that’s not the first time he’s done something like this in 2025.

In Georgia’s Week 1 game against Marshall, Branch caught a pass on a swing and took it to the end zone for a 47-yard touchdown.

On Tuesday, veteran linebacker Deontae Lawson shared what he’s seen from Branch on tape and stressed the importance of Alabama shutting him down as soon as possible.

“Branch is explosive,” Lawson said. “I think he has all their [Georgia] explosive plays this year, and he definitely was very explosive at USC last year and you can’t let him get going. You got to stop him in his tracks because if he gets going, it can be a big play. So, we want to limit that for sure.”

With a guy like Branch at Georgia’s disposal, Alabama will need to cover every inch of the field and tackle well in space, something that defensive coordinator Kane Wommack believes the Bulldogs will try to force the Tide to do this Saturday.

“They’re gonna stretch you laterally the width of the field and make you defend all 53 yards there laterally,” Wommack said on Monday. “So, for us, that will be a good challenge.”

Alabama already has to prioritize defending Georgia’s rushing attack, but the Tide has to make sure they don’t get lulled to sleep or else an explosive play could develop in the form of Branch.
