It might sound absurd to Ty Simpson, but the Alabama quarterback is firmly in this year’s Heisman Trophy race. Simpson is currently tied with Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith for the third-best odds to win the award, according to BetMGM, which has the duo at +800 behind Oregon quarterback Dante Moore (+500) and Miami quarterback Carson Beck (+600).

“I see Heisman level,” Alabama left tackle Kadyn Proctor said of Simpson after the Tide’s win over Vanderbilt last weekend. “He’s poised. He keeps us all together, keeps us tight, and we’re a tight-knit group. I’m gonna do everything that I can to protect him.”

Simpson, on the other hand, has been quick to dismiss the early hype, choosing instead to credit his teammates for his success.

“Honestly, it’s kind of absurd, the talk around it, because I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them, if it wasn’t for the defense getting me in a good position with turnovers and whatnot,” Simpson said. “That’s all external. I just want to do my job and make sure that I celebrate in the locker room with my guys, because I know I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Whether Simpson wants to celebrate it or not, his numbers pop off the page so far this season. Through five games, he’s completing 70.3% of his passes for 1,478 yards and 13 touchdowns with just one interception.

To better evaluate those stats, here’s a look at how they stack up against Alabama’s previous Heisman-caliber quarterbacks at this point in the season.
