Kalen DeBoer had some constructive criticism for his starting quarterback Ty Simpson after the Crimson Tide’s 27-24 road victory over Missouri on Saturday.
Simpson and the Crimson Tide offense had their ebbs and flows against the Tigers’ defense Saturday, scoring 17 of their 27 points in the first half. The redshirt junior was sacked four times and had a fumble to open the third quarter en route to throwing for an even 200 yards with three touchdowns on 23 of 31 passing attempts. This performance was enough to help Alabama pull out the win over Missouri.
DeBoer is excited about the win, but he wants Simpson to continue to play ‘within himself.’
“He’s got the ability, there’s no question,” DeBoer said. “When he stays within himself, he can make amazing plays and we just have to give him a little time. When he does, and the guys run the right routes and they’re in the right place. It’s more about being in the right place at the right time. He’s seeing the defense…So there’s things that he can keep getting better at, just staying within himself. That’s really the key for him is just stay within himself, not trying to do too much. When he does that, he stacks plays, he stacks first downs and sooner or later we end up in the endzone. So I think there’s still a lot of room for improvement. The sky’s the limit for him.”
The Alabama head coach went on to say there were parts of Simpson’s game that could have been cleaner.
“I think it’s everything,” DeBoer said. “It’s not just frustrated with pressure, it’s frustration with everything. There’s just things that could’ve been cleaner. It’s not bad but it’s just like ‘he knows what is perfect. And that’s what he wants, he wants it perfect. And he wants to every possession, so a little frustration is in that. But I think in the end, he does a good job of regrouping himself. Our guys regroup around him and they feed off of his confidence. And that’s what matters to me, is how we come back out the next drive and where going back to work.”
Simpson and Alabama will look to play cleaner against Tennessee next weekend.
