Will Alabama football match up size against size this weekend when it goes up against the Tennessee Volunteers?
The Crimson Tide will be tasked with stopping one of the tallest wideouts in college football this weekend in Chris Brazzell. The redshirt junior stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 200 pounds.
Fortunately for Alabama, it has a long cornerback at its disposal who could match up well against Brazzell. Alabama’s freshman defensive back, Dijon Lee, who stands at 6-foot-4, is coming on strong as of late, and he could be used a lot to cover the tall wideout on Saturday.
The Tide’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack asked about this approach on Monday.
“You can do some of those things for sure, but when they’re going fast, it’s hard sometimes to just say, “Hey, we’re gonna go trade and match corners over all the time,” Wommack said. “Those are things that we have done that in the past, those are things that you can do. Some of it is based upon what type of coverage you’re wanting to play. Some of it is situational based. It’s not like we have one 6’4″ guy and we have all 5’9″ DBs other than that. Zabien Brown is 6’2″. We’ve got guys that are long, athletic, so we do feel like we can challenge their receiving core, but certainly, we’ll look at whatever matchups we can have.”
Brazzell has pulled in 32 receptions for 536 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Stopping him on Saturday will have to be a priority for the Tide as they prepare for the Vols.
