Being the man to follow up the GOAT is an impossible task and Kalen DeBoer knew that when taking over for Nick Saban.
After his first two seasons, DeBoer’s outlook within the national media and fanbase is still quite mixed despite taking Alabama to the SEC Championship and winning its first playoff game of his tenure. However, DeBoer has his fair share of warts including lopsided losses to Georgia, Indiana, Florida State and Vanderbilt on his record.
In those moments the comparisons to Saban led teams come flooding in as college football reminisces and its only fired up this offseason with many pundits believing DeBoer may not be the right man for the job.
Cole Cubelic isn’t one of those analysts and in fact voiced how sick he is hearing those comparisons during his radio show McElroy And Cubelic In the Morning.
“You can say that direction of the program is nowhere near where it has been in certain points of time – from 2009 to 2021 – there weren’t a whole lot of times where the program was trending down,” Cubelic said. “All the points on this team not being where they were five years ago. I’m gonna ask you a real question college football fans, who is where they were five years ago? … We’re gonna keep comparing this Alabama team to the Saban peak?
“We know that’s gone, we know that’s not real, we know a lot of the fan base is unrealistic and will expect that every year. … They will expect this with every coach. It’s not different. But who is what they were five years ago?”
Despite Cubelic’s rant, DeBoer’s criticisms will continue unless Alabama’s success takes a step up. Even then it still likely won’t silence the herd.
