Alabama football announced it will play Georgia State to open the 2025 season, continuing a trend of opening against a team not in a Power Four conference.
This trend will get rolling in the fall when the Tide opens the season against East Carolina on Sept. 5. Marshall will travel to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 4 to kick off the 2027 football season.
The last time Alabama opened the season against a team not in a power conference was in 2024, when Western Kentucky faced the Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama defeated the Hilltoppers 63-0.
The days of teams like Alabama opening the season against marquee Power Four non-conference opponents may be a thing of the past, given the way the current College Football Playoff format is set up.
