Kalen DeBoer seems to be embracing one of the biggest mindsets of Alabama fans.
He is regarded as an offensive mind, but the 51-year-old from South Dakota is now all in on having multiple defensive players putting opposing quarterbacks under duress. DeBoer wants more turnovers and negative plays created from the Crimson Tide’s defense, but it starts with having opposition scared to death. Alabama has the athletes on its roster to generate as much friction as possible, yet can it create the right looks to consistently have success on the field?

A thought DeBoer brought in Tuesday’s media availability that had reporters in deep thought and rewinding their recorders to catch everything is the experimentation at the ‘Bandit’ and ‘Wolf’ positions on the defensive front. He referred to it as ‘position flex’ and while it sounded confusing to some, there is a reason why the experiment is happening. DeBoer enjoys the attacking mentality of his friend, Kane Wommack, but he does not desire to have Alabama’s defensive coordinator blitz too much.
He is focused on navigating scenarios where the Tide has several pass rushers on the field at a time.
Alabama was at its best in 2025 when it created turnovers to swing momentum to its offense. The ability to blend both positions together to propel opportunities for others should be a scary thought for everyone in college football.
“We talked about offensive line. I think there’s some guys actually at the Bandit/Wolf spot.”

“Yhonzae Pierre has built himself up,” DeBoer said. “He is getting better and he has some position flex now, which is going to allow guys like Justin Hill and different combinations, personnel packages to get on the field. Those guys have body types and skill sets that are going to allow our defensive staff to have fun, but put them in positions to cut it loose and get after people.”

DeBoer also singled out players such as Dez Zulu (transfer from South Carolina), Devan Thompkins (transfer from Southern California), Jamarion Matthews, and Fatutoa Henry as names that could be productive in the Bandit/Wolf experiment. Pierre is a pass rush specialist, yet Alabama needs more than him to create fear in opponents. The national championship teams that Tide fans before DeBoer came were those that had creatures all over the defense.
What is standing out early about Alabama quarterbacks to DeBoer this spring
Hopefully, this experimentation leads to a level of dominant performances up front.
