Saban says no player in the 2026 NFL Draft has made more plays than former Alabama DB

Nick Saban feels no player in the 2026 NFL Draft stacks up to Caleb Downs in terms of making plays.

Downs played and started as a freshman for the Alabama Crimson Tide during Saban’s last season of his college coaching career. He led the Tide in tackles with 107 during his only season in Tuscaloosa.

Saban was a guest on “the Pat McAfee Show,” and he discussed what makes Downs a great NFL prospect.

“Caleb Downs made more plays in college than anybody in the draft,” Saban said.

Saban went on to reflect on Downs’ time in Tuscaloosa.

“When he played for us as a freshman, he would have been the first safety taken in the draft,” said Saban. “The guy is so instinctive, he’s got really good ability, he’s a phenomenal person and he’s a football junkie.”

Downs is projected to be a first-round pick in the draft on Thursday after spending the last two seasons of his college career at Ohio State.
