The pre-draft process is different for each player looking to achieve their dream of playing in the National Football League, and Ty Simpson’s path to getting drafted by the Los Angeles Rams was no different.
Simpson was drafted by the Rams in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the No. 13 overall pick. An interesting development was revealed soon after. Simpson told Sirius XM he had never met the Rams’ head coach Sean McVay, according to NFL sports broadcaster Ross Tucker.
While this is not normal practice for a lot of NFL teams, it looks to be normal for McVay.
“He hasn’t met a prospect before drafting him since 2020,” The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue posted to X in response to Tucker. “Doesn’t go to combine or other all-star events (nor does Snead), and Rams don’t do 30 visits. Just context, not making an argument either way.”
McVay told reporters after the draft that drafting Ty Simpson was a move to address the Rams’ backup quarterback situation.
“Let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team,” McVay said during his press conference after the first round of the draft. “You get a chance to be able to address the backup quarterback. We’ve got Stetson (Bennett). We’ve talked about the importance of Jimmy (Garoppolo). To be able to add somebody that you can evaluate a body of work where he was asked to play the position and a lot of things that do translate in terms of concepts, reading with his feet, some of the different things in the drop back in the play action game and the movement game.”
The Rams look to have an opportunity to have their quarterback position secured for years to come.
