Who does Alabama lean on to replace Ty Simpson at quarterback?

Germie Bernard, a former Crimson Tide wide receiver, went in the second round (No. 47 overall) to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was successful in his two seasons in Tuscaloosa (Ala.) after following DeBoer from Washington to the Tide. Bernard was the team’s leading pass catcher last season with 64 receptions for 862 yards and seven touchdowns. He totaled 114 career receptions for 1,656 yards and 12 scores (three rushing touchdowns) in two years. The Las Vegas (Nev.) native was the most reliable weapon for Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson at Alabama.

He will be productive in the pros, but who will the Tide lean on to replace him?

Lotzier Brooks

Germie Bernard did a lot for Alabama at 6-foot-1 and 204 pounds, but Lotzier Brooks has some qualities that could fill in the role.

Brooks has the speed and versatility to line up in the shotgun, take a direct snap, and make an explosive play on the perimeter. The New Jersey native could be worked into the jet sweep motion, and he will be a willing blocker to help teammates. Brooks’ skill set fits the slot, yet he can also stack a defensive back on the outside.

The rising sophomore would be an option to replace Bernard.

Rico Scott

Rico Scott may have the most compact frame to replace Bernard.

The 6-foot, 198-pounder is a competitive blocker, can operate the jet sweep/end around game, and plays from the inside out as a receiver. He has time on task, including three career touchdown receptions.

Bernard and Scott have styles that favor each other on the field.

Cederian Morgan

Cederian Morgan had a strong spring and that may push the five-star freshman to significant playing time.

The 6-foot-4, 223-pounder carries a bigger frame than Bernard, yet he has secure hands and marquee athleticism. Morgan has the potential to be a good blocker on the edge as well.

Derek Meadows

Derek Meadows, like Morgan, has an impressive frame at 6’5” and 215 pounds.

He showcased explosiveness in spring practice and turned heads with his playmaking capability.

Meadows may not be as versatile as Bernard, but his size may make him the red zone target for touchdowns passes. It will be interesting to see how the Tide uses Meadows in the fall.
