Why CBS Sports college football analyst feels Alabama was ‘sloppy’ against East Carolina

CBS Sports college football analyst Richard Johnson said he felt the Alabama Crimson Tide opened the season sloppily against East Carolina.

The Crimson Tide defeated the Pirates 48-10 to open the season at home on Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Tide led East Carolina 38-7 at halftime, thanks to multiple rushing touchdowns.

Alabama’s offense did not finish the game strong and only scored 10 points in the second half as drives began to stall out and mistakes crept into their execution.

“I thought this Alabama team was sloppy,” Johnson said. “Now, they win going away, but I thought they were sloppy. You saw mistakes. You saw drops again from Ryan Coleman-Williams. We didn’t think we were gonna see that. This was supposed to be new year, new guy, new me for Ryan Coleman-Williams. New number, new name, no gloves. Things were supposed to be different. But you saw some of the jitters from him in the first quarter. You hope, if you’re Alabama, that he got it out of his system today because what’s coming on this schedule, they’re gonna have to be ready, and they’re gonna have to be the best version of themselves.”

Alabama went scoreless in the third quarter against the Pirates. However, the Crimson Tide’s defense did not give up a touchdown in the last two quarters of the football game.

The Tide will get back to the drawing board this week ahead of a conference matchup against Kentucky on the road.
