Rule changes could be coming to college football in the near future

College football is considering changing some of its rules, according to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Delleneger.

There is interest in shortening the length of college football games. Four possible rule changes are being considered to do so. Here is a look at all four:

1. Teams will be unable to call consecutive timeouts. For instance, if a team is driving down the field to kick a field goal that will potentially tie the game or win the game, an opposing coach can’t call a timeout to “ice” the kicker.

2. There will be no untimed downs at the end of the first or third quarter, meaning that if there is a penalty at the end of a quarter, the play will resume in the next quarter.

3. The clock will continue to run after a team accomplishes a first down, unless it’s inside two minutes for either the first or second half.

4. The clock will run on incompletions once the ball is spotted by a referee.

These rules would be an adjustment for many teams. The changes would likely be implemented for this upcoming season, but there are still a lot of hoops to jump through before they are finalized.
