Alabama quarterback, Jalen Milroe has had a rollercoaster go of things this week at the Reese Senior Bowl.
The redshirt junior signal caller out of Katy, Texas has had some highs and lows during the first few practices of the week down in Mobile, Alabama. Milroe has shown flashes of greatness through his raw skillset and intangibles, but he’s also had moments that may have made some evaluators have cause for pause.
ESPN NFL analyst, Louis Riddick was one of them on Wednesday when he joined Paul Finebaum to discuss the Alabama quarterback’s performance through two practices. Riddick assessed Milroe as an “uneven” prospect but believes that he is “supremely gifted” and can thrive at the NFL level if placed in the right situation.
“I think uneven is a great word because that really does define what his time has been like down here in Mobile so far,” Riddick said. “The good is great, he threw a seven route, a corner route today at about 30-40 yards Paul (Finebaum) that was as pretty as you’ll ever see in one on ones with wide receivers and defensive backs. When he got into team and then he had to be the one getting in the huddle, regurgitating to play and getting up to the line of scrimmage, being able to execute the proper footwork and be able to get his eyes down the field and put the ball where he needed to, there were some good moments and some moments where he was way off target and looked totally unsure of himself.”
For these reasons, Riddick later went on to explain why some NFL franchises shouldn’t select Milroe in this upcoming NFL draft.
“Look, I think for Jalen, the book isn’t gonna be written on him for quite a while,” Riddick said. “I think where he goes in the draft, and I don’t mean round, I mean in terms of the place that he goes too, the kind of structure that they have around him.. So if you are someone or you’re a football team that doesn’t have patience and doesn’t have a good developmental program, do not draft him. Do not do that to the young man. He needs time, he’s supremely gifted. He’s shown that in flashes but he has a lot of work ahead of him still.”
Milroe’s stock and where he could possibly land will definitely be one of the biggest headlines in this April’s draft,
