Alabama football will enter the upcoming season with one of the best secondaries in college football.

Each of the Crimson Tide’s expected starters has starting experience under their belt. Dijon Lee, Zabien Brown, Red Morgan, Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard are expected to be the Tide’s starters in the secondary. Hubbard currently leads this group in career interceptions with seven to his name.

Alabama is expected to lean on Hubbard as a leader on defense this fall. The hybrid defender will likely line up at different spots within the Tide’s defense, with the versatility he brings to the field. This will likely get him an opportunity at more interceptions than his teammates, but it does not guarantee he will be the leader at the end of the season.

Dijon Lee, who will enter his sophomore season this fall, could be the favorite behind Hubbard to take the reins as the Tide’s interception leader. Lee’s opportunities will likely come from teams attempting to stay away from the cornerback playing opposite of him. Zabien Brown is expected to be one of the best cornerbacks in college football this season, and teams may attempt to test the technically sound defensive back less than ever, creating more opportunities for Lee.

Brown’s ability to turn interceptions into six points may outweigh the risk of throwing the football his way.

Morgan is set to start at the Tide’s Husky position. This is a hybrid safety role, and players who play this position are expected to do a lot of things right. They have to defend the run, play in coverage against slot wide receivers and blitz when called upon to do so. Morgan will likely shine here, but unfortunately for him, no one at this position under Kane Wommack has ever led the Tide in picks. Morgan has never intercepted a pass in his career.

Sabb has five interceptions to his name. He has flashed the ability to be a ball-hawking safety at times during his time at Alabama and Michigan. He will also likely get his fair shot at taking the ball away in the air this season.

Wommack prioritizes taking the ball away, and he has plenty of players on the backend of his defense who could do exactly that.
