Alabama Was Tennessee’s Nightmare Saturday
By: Larry Burton
After being drubbed by Georgia 41-0, Tennessee and more importantly Butch Jones had to show that though the Vol Nation understands the glaring problems that were circling the program, that Jones was on the path to fix them.
What they saw Saturday was that neither Tennessee or Butch Jones had a clue on how to begin fixing them and that the program is simply continuing its slide into going the wrong way in a rebuilding process that has been going on for at least the last dozen years.
Adding insult to injury, Alabama dominated Tennessee with third, fourth, fifth and even sixth team players, clearing the bench and never ceasing to dominate a team whose only bright spot was that they finally scored a touchdown when Alabama’s backup quarterback threw a pick six. Tennessee’s offense however, continued to be stymied by every team they face and may be the only team in the SEC that makes Florida’s offense look like a points scoring juggernaut.
The betting world thought that the Vols would lose by 35, they lost by 38 in this 42-7 contest. They did absolutely nothing to improve upon the pitiful expectations that the world has of this team.
And folks, this was with Saban clearly calling off the dogs after the first half and playing everyone but the brass section of the Million Dollar Band. This was not a game that said anything about how great Alabama was, but a game that cemented just how bad Tennessee is.
This was a game that showed that Butch Jones has no clue how to make adjustments in the eye of the storm, motivate players to fight to the ending whistle or build a program.
Tennessee is now 3-4 overall, winless in the SEC, tied for last in their division and facing the prospect that instead of winning the SEC East, which was their goal, that they may not even make a bowl game. They face the very real prospect of losing to Vanderbilt yet again, being the worst team in the state of Tennessee again and being the joke of a team with adequate talent and inadequate results yet again.
This is and has been the nightmare of Tennessee football and it’s only getting worse, not better.
