Alabama football enrolled a good portion of its 2023 recruiting class in January.
Each of the Crimson Tide’s early enrollees will participate in the Crimson Tide’s full off-season program. Touchdown Alabama will highlight each of Alabama’s newest additions over the next few weeks in an article series.
We continue our series with Anniston product, Roq Montgomery.
–Position: Offensive Lineman
-Hometown: Anniston, Alabama
-Weight: 332 pounds
–Summary: Roq Montgomery, who was previously known as Ryqueze McElderry, is one of the biggest sleepers in Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class.
Montgomery was not ranked higher than the No. 200 prospect on any major recruiting sites during the 2023 recruiting cycle. Most had him listed within the No. 30 to No. 20 range when it came to interior offensive linemen. However, Touchdown Alabama has a different opinion on the Anniston product after watching him play multiple times throughout his high school career for the Bulldogs.
The former four-star is what everyone is looking for at the guard position, he is a true mauler, who loves the get after it in the trenches and work up the field to pave the way for running backs in open space. He has experience playing both guard and tackle, which has allowed him to grow in pass protection.
The freshman is already working on improving his body.
He has dropped 42 pounds since enrolling at the University of Alabama as an early enrollee a couple of months ago. His body transformation is expected to allow him move faster in the future.
There is usually a freshman or two, who comes out of nowhere and makes an impact in year one for the Crimson Tide. McElderry could be one of those for Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class.
