Alabama football’s first spring practice session under Kaleb DeBoer is approaching.

The staff at Touchdown Alabama Magazine will spotlight 30 players to watch over the spring with spring practice starting next week.

Up next is the true freshman cornerback, Jaylen Mbakwe.

Jaylen Mbakwe

Classification: Freshman

Hometown: Clay, AL

Position: Cornerback

Size: 5-foot-11, 170 Pounds

2023 stats: N/A

Summary

Mbakwe was considered the No. 1 ATH in the 2024 recruiting class for a reason.

The Clay-Chalkville product could have been recruited at wide receiver or defensive back out of high school. He was an electrifying athlete, who led the Cougars to a state championship while lining up at quarterback as a senior.

As expected, Mbakwe is listed as a defensive back on the Crimson Tide’s football roster. While most of his big plays happen as an offensive weapon in high school, Mbakwe is an impressive cornerback prospect as well. He has the tangibles needed to be productive in the secondary at the next level with his 10.46 100-meter dash speed and athleticism.

The Alabama freshman plays cool and under control in man coverage, which his speed and ability to run with defenders allow him to excel at, and he closes on the football exceptionally well.

Alabama’s recent departures at cornerback open the door for Mbakwe to have a chance to make an impact in year one.
