On the inaugural episode of “The Dynasty: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide”, Alabama legend, AJ McCarron chastised the idea of further playoff expansion.

“When will enough be enough?” McCarron said. “When we got away from the BCS era because people were pissed, especially when they put LSU one and us [Alabama] back to number two. ‘Oh. we should have been in there. We shouldn’t have been number three.’ Well, then you expand it and go to the College Football Playoff format and create four teams. Well, then whoever’s the fifth seed is just pissed that they weren’t the fourth seed. And then we go to 12, and now whoever’s the 13 or on is pissed because they’re not in the top 12. At what point is this going to solve anything? We just keep adding.”

Expanding to 16 teams means there are likely no BYE weeks for the top four seeds, but some formats present the idea of dishing out a certain number of automatic playoff bids to conferences based on how deep of a conference they are.

The voice of Alabama football and co-host of “The Dynasty” Chris Stewart highlighted one of the 16-team formats that has been pitched.

“There are formats out there that talk about the SEC, Big 10, getting four automatic bids each, the Big 12 getting two, the ACC getting two and there being one for the highest ranked Group of Six champion,” Stewart said. “And in addition to that, you’ve got three at large bids. And of course, Notre Dame will factor into that.”

The argument against the idea is that it is subjective, but McCarron said the Big 10 and SEC are undisputedly the two main horses and powerhouses in college football.

McCarron believes there is only one solution to the current postseason conundrum.

“The only way that all of this gets solved is for the Big 10 and the SEC to leave the NCAA,” McCarron said. “Create their own deal, invite other teams in, and you have an NFL-style AFC, NFC division. And that’s how we’re doing it because the NCAA has no clue what they are doing right now. They haven’t for many years, and I think that’s been proven. I just don’t understand when enough is enough.”
