Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell had been turning heads before he stepped foot on campus, but now through one week of fall camp, the freshman is beginning to display the unique qualities which heralded him as a five-star recruit.
One staffer that’s already been left impressed is his quarterback coach and co-offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan who detailed some of the rare qualities he’s seen in Russell so far.
“He loves football, so he loves learning each and every day,” Sheridan said on Monday. “I think one of the special qualities he has for a young player is his ability to move onto the next play. He doesn’t get discouraged, it or when mistakes happen. Which they all happen for young players. He’s got a really short term memory in that regard.”
Russell is currently in the midst of a battle for the starting job alongside returning quarterbacks Austin Mack and Ty Simpson.
Despite his own in-experience at the college level, Russell has carried himself with poise and confidence through the early portions of camp as well.
“He certainly has that, and that’s a credit to both of his parents in how he was raised,” Sheridan said. “Just his confidence in himself, he’s got a great balance of confidence and humility that’s pretty rare and pretty special that way. For a young player, that’s been great to see.”
Alabama returns to practice this week as it continue to work towards its matchup with Florida State on Aug. 30.
