Alabama DC Kane Wommack says Tide LB is ‘playing his best football’ after returning from injury

Alabama football’s linebacker, Deontae Lawson is expected to be at 100 percent when he returns to the field as the Tide’s starting linebacker against Florida State.

Lawson suffered a season-ending injury against Oklahoma during the 2024 season. He opted to return to the Crimson Tide to rehab and recover from his injury over taking his talents to the NFL.

The Crimson Tide now have him back as one of their defensive veterans, and he looks better than ever, per Alabama’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

“To me, he looks a little bit more like the 2023 Deontae Lawson from a weight standpoint,” Wommack said. “I don’t know if he got too heavy last season, necessarily, he carried a lot of bulk on and moved really well. But obviously from an injury standpoint, he had to come back from that and his body is just in a position to where he’s moving really fast. He looks good. He’s playing with great anticipation, his level of leadership is taken to another level. I mean, he’s playing his best football right now, which is pretty impressive to say, eight, nine months, coming off of a leg injury. I am really impressed with him, proud of him.”

Lawson has been all smiles since returning to the field. He told Touchdown Alabama he was feeling good physically early in fall camp while talking at Alabama’s Media Day.

“I feel great,” Lawson said. “I’m just super blessed, just to know I haven’t been in pads and moving around with the team since November. That’s all I can think about, how it feels, just being out there. I’m not really thinking too much about anything, just having fun with the guys. I feel good. No doubt.”

This is a promising sign for the Tide.
