What Alabama players have seen from Ty Simpson in his first starts

Ty Simpson’s teammates gave a glowing review of him as the starting quarterback ahead of a crucial SEC showdown next week vs. Georgia.

According to Miami transfer wideout Isaiah Horton, the relationship between quarterback and wide receiver is great and has been built through the grind.

“Great relationship,” Horton said. “We work on our craft every day with receivers. So, we know we take pride in what we do, which is catching the ball. Ty takes pride in what he does, which is throwing the ball. Y’all seen that relate to the field, but we got to keep going. We got to do better. We’re not satisfied.”

It’s noticeable that Simpson has learned to stay in the pocket a bit longer and rip the ball down the field to his receivers. That requires a quarterback to trust the guys he’s throwing to, and based on Alabama’s last two performances and what Horton said Thursday, that trust is high.

Against Wisconsin, Simpson was able to stand in the pocket and complete downfield strikes to his guys, but even with the pressure getting to him sometimes, his teammates noticed that Simpson is a ball player.

“Ty’s been doing everything on and off the field as a leader, too,” offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor said. “And it’s obviously shown up on the field. He’s doing his thing. I need to do some stuff better, obviously, to not put him in that position, but he’s a ball player. Point blank period.”

Simpson’s stats from the last two games are stupendous, completing 41 of 46 passes for a combined 608 yards and seven touchdowns.

In light of the great performances, Horton said he notices that Simpson is not complacent, saying he’s eager to do better.

“His mindset,” Horton said. “His composure… he had an incredible two games, but that doesn’t faze him. He’s eager to do more. He wants to do better. I love that.”
