DeVonta Smith was a part of one of the best college football wide receiver rooms of all time when he was at Alabama, taking the field alongside Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle and Henry Ruggs.
Smith went on to win the Heisman Trophy, but when all four of them were at Alabama, it was almost impossible to guard every one of them on a particular play, leading to multiple scores every game.
In an interview with Patrick Surtain II and Terrion Arnold on their podcast “Closed on Sundays with Pat and Terrion”, Smith said that Nick Saban would get tired of the offense scoring so quickly that he’d tell them to run the ball to give the defense time to rest.
“It was just crazy bro,” Smith said. “We used to be out there, like whoever touched the ball, they could just go score. It got so bad that Saban was telling them to run the ball. Stop throwing it because we would catch the ball and score. One pass. 80 yards. Saban come over there ‘Run the ball. Stop passing the ball. Y’all scoring too fast. Defense is tired.’ That s*** used to be so fun.”
A wide receiver room like that may not be seen again in today’s college football due to NIL, but Alabama currently has a room that is leveling up each week with veterans like Germie Bernard and Isaiah Horton as well as younger talent like Ryan Williams and Lotzeir Brooks.
