Next season, the Michigan State Spartans will have Alabama co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan as its offensive coordinator, and he received high praise from Alabama’s own offensive coordinator on Saturday.
In Saturday’s press conference, Ryan Grubb said that Sheridan is “an absolute stud” and talked about him coaching Alabama through the postseason as the Michigan State job awaits him.
“Nick’s much more than a co-worker,” Grubb said. “He’s a dear friend. I mean that. He’s just an absolute stud. In this profession, you celebrate the wins for the good guys, and Nick’s definitely one of them. I think for him, just being able to take that next step, Nick has always been really, really good with building, and I think that’s what you see with great coaches is guys that take steps, they develop, they stop somewhere, they’re with people, they grow and become even better coaches, and I think with Coach Fitzgerald, he’s got a great one.”
Sheridan played college football at Michigan, and he will be taking the job for the Wolverines’ rival. Still, Michigan is where he is from, so he gets to do the thing he loves back in the state he is from.
With coaching jobs being filled left and right this season, Alabama has not been immune to the coaching carousel as Sheridan and former wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard are leaving the program.
Grubb alluded to the coaching carousel having some complications that come with it, but he highlighted that none of the complications are coming from Sheridan as he is not going anywhere until Alabama’s CFP run ends.
“As far as the staff, there’s certainly some complications that go with those things, and I would say again, not to over compliment Nick, but none of those complications have ever come from Nick. He’s just been a total stud. If there’s somebody that’s up in the office as much as me, it’s Nick, and he’s always right there to talk about whatever we’re going through.”
With Sheridan, he told Grubb about the opportunity the first chance he got, and he declared that he was not going anywhere as long as Alabama continues to advance in the College Football Playoff.
“When he told me what was going on, one of the first things that he said, even from the beginning when he first told me what was going on, one of the first things he said was ‘I’m here until the end Grubb. I’m not taking the job until we go win this thing,’ and that was like statement number one,” Grubb said. “Just says a lot about his character and what kind of person he sees. Super excited for him.”
Alabama will play Indiana on Thursday at The Rose Bowl.
