With quarterback Ty Simpson’s departure for the NFL Draft, the quarterback battle immediately became one of the biggest topics of conversation surrounding the Crimson Tide. But one area stands out the most on defense: the defensive line.
Alabama saw the loss of six defensive linemen and two edge rushers over the offseason, leaving the Tide in need of using the transfer portal to recoup and potentially upgrade after the departures.
Tim Keenan and LT Overton were the most notable losses, both headed for the pros after impressive careers in Tuscaloosa. Keon Keeley, James Smith and Qua Russaw are some of the more notable names that hit the portal.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer went to work in recruiting, hitting the high school ranks and transfer portal to ensure Alabama would be in a better position headed into the 2026 season, specifically by securing 11 incomers to offset the eight losses.
But that’s not everyone the Tide will have available in the fall; they will also have nine returning players. Edge rusher Yhonzae Pierre is the most impactful player returning to Tuscaloosa and is basically guaranteed a starting role on the line.
Everyone else in the trenches will have to fight their way up the depth chart for starting positions or significant playing time, given the fact that Pierre is the only returner with significant experience, and newcomers still need to prove themselves.
Plenty of potential lies with 6-foot-5, 290-pound USC transfer Devan Thompkins, 6-foot-5, 330-pound Oregon transfer Terrance Green and 6-foot-6, 255-pound South Carolina transfer Desmond Umeoluzu, mainly because of their size.
Thompkins was the most impactful of the three last season, recording 18 solo tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble last season. He’ll hope to improve on those numbers this season, while Green and Umeoluzu attempt to take on a larger role as well.
The trio showed its capabilities on A-Day, frequently disrupting the offense, particularly in the run game. They have all been in college for at least two years, so they have some decent Power Five experience already as well.
There is one more returner that may be primed for an immediate impact, though: Justin Hill. The sophomore out of Ohio made his presence known on A-Day after finalizing his freshman season with 10 total tackles and a pass deflection.
Hill said he wants to impact the game every play he’s on the field, and with the way he played a little over a week ago, it definitely appears as though he has the talent to make those words a reality for the upcoming season.
The Crimson Tide will have plenty of talent and options on the defensive line, but the question remains: who will be the x-factor? Pierre seems like the likely candidate, but tons of time remain for one player to set himself above the rest.
