Defensive lineman who is ‘hard’ to block one-on-one developing situational role for Alabama

Steve Mboumoua is set to enter his second season with the Alabama Crimson Tide this fall, and at 6-foot-4 and 303 pounds, he for sure looks the part.

Mboumoua is originally from Quebec, Canada. He played in three games last season for the Crimson Tide and recorded five tackles after transferring from Southwest Mississippi Community College after the 2024 season.

Alabama’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack was asked about Mboumoua on Tuesday, and he stated blocking the Alabama defensive lineman one-on-one is a tall task for an offensive lineman.

“I think Steve has a pretty unique skill set,” Wommack said. “His strength, athleticism, the physicality that he can play the game with. He brings a lot to the table, especially when you think about big personnel packages. Asking an offensive lineman to go one-on-one with him, that’s a hard ask.”

The path to the field for Mboumoua is not essentially a straight shot this fall, but he is trending towards being used in certain situations. How he performs in fall camp from here on out will determine what those situations are and how often he plays.

“And so I think he’s doing a nice job of being able to play the fundamentals of the position,” Wommack told reporters. “I think he’s got to continue to take steps in the right direction of just knowing what to do consistently, and that ultimately will define how many snaps he takes and in what situations.”

Alabama opens the 2026 season on Sept. 5 against East Carolina. It will be interesting to see how often Mboumoua sees playing time.
