What Alabama wide receivers are working on to help Russell in scramble situations

Alabama football’s new starting quarterback Keelon Russell is one of college football’s best running quarterbacks, and with this valuable skill set comes the opportunity to extend plays and push the ball down the field in scramble situations.

The Crimson Tide’s receiving options looked as if they left something to be desired in this area against East Carolina. Derek Meadows was asked about what Alabama is doing to be better when those situations arrive again.

“When he’s scrambling, he’s trying to find us open,” Meadows said. “We’re just doing our scrambled drills, just trying to get open and just help him out as much as possible because he’s a tremendous QB. He can do a lot of things others can. I’m excited to see where, like, him just keep growing over the years, and he’s gonna be a tremendous QB, excited to see.”

Meadows went on to say that he is excited to be on the receiving end of Russell throwing the football.

“He’s one of a kind,” Meadows told reporters. “You haven’t seen nothing yet, so I’m excited to see him just keep growing and keep growing inch by inch, every game. He’s doing a hell of a job, so I’m very excited for him and just watch. You guys are gonna be very excited to see him ball out.”

Keelon Russell threw for 256 yards in his first career start Saturday against East Carolina. He and Meadows connected three times for 44 yards in the win.

Alabama will be back in action Saturday when the Tide takes on Kentucky on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
