Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell was extremely impressive throughout his debut as the Crimson Tide’s starter last weekend.

Russell thrived both on the ground and through the air during Alabama’s 48-10 victory over ECU. The sophomore quarterback was quick to bounce back after struggling on the opening drive of the contest, and Russell’s versatility was on full display throughout the majority of Saturday’s win over the Pirates.

Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron recently took a moment to comment on Russell’s play last weekend, as McCarron claims he was extremely impressed with Russell’s pocket awareness.

“Probably the most impressive thing was stepping up in the pocket and knowing how to escape but also keeping his eyes down field.” McCarron said. “I thought he had multiple players where that came into effect. Usually younger guy, rush gets to him, they start to feel it, like eyes go down and they’re just trying to find an escape, and creating a lane to escape. I thought he did a really good job of stepping up in the pocket.”

Russell recorded 256 yards through the air while also scrambling for a team high 86 rushing yards last weekend. The quarterback’s pocket awareness set him up for numerous big plays against ECU, and Russell will now look to keep things rolling throughout the first SEC matchup of his career against Kentucky.
