Hutzler takes over for Sal Sunseri, who has been moved to an off-field role.

Nick Saban announced on Wednesday that Sunseri will be the special assistant to the head coach. Sunseri’s new role will include helping Coach Saban operate the NCAA transfer portal. Sunseri, 62, served two stints with outside linebackers at Alabama.

He started in Tuscaloosa from 2009 to 2011, and he returned from 2019 to 2021. Sunseri produced 103 tackles for loss and 56 sacks at the position in the last three years, including 34.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks from Will Anderson in 2021.

Since 2009, Sunseri has been on three national championship teams (2009, 2011, 2020) and three SEC Championship teams (2009, 2020, 2021) as a position coach.  Hutzler has experience with outside linebackers, coaching the position at New Mexico (2012-13), Florida (2014), and Boston College (2015). He coached inside linebackers at Florida (2010-11), South Carolina (2016-19), and Texas (2020). It will be interesting to see how Hutzler interacts with players at the position starting in spring practice.
