The Georgia Bulldogs are set to host the Alabama Crimson Tide in a game that carries College Football Playoff implications and just downright bragging rights for the two storied programs. For two teams with much to prove, it’s no secret neither can afford a loss with what’s at stake in college football this year.
The last time these two teams matched up, it was a nonstop showcase of two spectacular running backs that went back and forth all night long. Alabama’s Eddie Lacy and Georgia’s Todd Gurley put the college football world on notice that their futures would extend beyond playing on Saturday’s and on to a bevy of future Sunday contests in their careers.
For Georgia’s Nick Chubb, he has a chance to do something special and light a spark into his Heisman campaign with a performance akin to what Gurley did to the Tide in 2012. While a victorious outcome on the legs of Chubb would undoubtedly ensure a visit to New York (provided he continues on a successful path for the remainder of the year), extending his 100-yard game streak to 13 along with a few compelling runs and scores is all he needs to see to it his invitation is gift wrapped in a shiny envelope seeking his presence at the event.
The odds however, are stacked heavily against him being that this defense has shown little reason as to how it’s possible for one man to accomplish such a feat. The book on Chubb is out and even the casual fan can see the guy is a rare and exceptional talent primed for greatness. However, even the greats dealt with their case of adversity and while the Tide has their issues on the offensive side of the ball, they are beginning to come into their own on defense and that does not bode well for Chubb and his Heisman hopes.
Even still, a solid performance could keep him in the running provided he shows out against the other opponents on their schedule. I’ve made it clear I believe his consecutive streak of 100-yard games ends at 12, but if he manages to do otherwise — and then some — he will begin to give fellow contender Leonard Fournette a run for his money.
