Alabama football’s freshman quarterback, Keelon Russell reminds Ryan Grubb of two quarterbacks he coached who are now in the NFL.
Grubb previously coached at Fresno State and Washington under Kalen DeBoer before taking the job as the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator. He had an opportunity to coach New Orleans Saints quarterback, Jake Haener, while at Fresno State and Michael Penix while at Washington.
Russell draws comparisons to both signal callers, according to Grubb.
“One of the things I noticed, think about Jake Haener way back to Fresno State,” Grubb said. “He’s at the Saints now, got a really whippy quick release. Once he made his decision, he was very decisive with the ball. I see that with Key a lot. Keelon’s vision reminds me of Michael (Penix) a little bit. He has good wide vision with the field and can see it even when he doesn’t know exactly what’s going on. So, he’s still working through all the processes.”
The former five-star is an early enrollee for the Crimson Tide. His decision to join the Crimson Tide last month has put him in a position to battle for an opportunity to start in year one for the Tide.
