Alabama QB coach shows major confidence in Keelon Russell

Alabama players gave praise to Keelon Russell after a strong spring.

The Alabama Crimson Tide football team will roll into battle with Keelon Russell as the starting quarterback, and quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis is all in on the sophomore playmaker.

“Keelon Russell is gonna be the starting quarterback here because he’s a playmaker,” Ellis said to Yea Alabama. “He’s the guy that we know when the ball is in his hands, a lot of good shit can happen.”

Russell was able to beat out senior Austin Mack and win the starting quarterback job. The competition comes to an end with a little under two weeks to go before Alabama football’s season opener.

Alabama’s coaching staff has showcased nothing but confidence when talking about Russell over the last few weeks, and he was able to win the job in fall camp. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb highlighted toward the start of fall camp that Russell’s biggest improvement from the spring to the fall was that he took better care of the football.

Russell’s first practice as the starting quarterback will be Monday.

The Crimson Tide will host East Carolina on Sept. 5. This will be Russell’s first collegiate start.
