Love him or hate him: Alabama football rolls with Jalen Hurts at quarterback

Brett Davis - USA TODAY Sports

The ebb and flow that is the relationship between some University of Alabama football fans and sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts made its way to the Crimson Tide’s media viewing period, where the players are concerned.

Many thoughts have approached the table on whether or not Hurts should be the guy, or if head coach Nick Saban should turn to freshman Tua Tagovailoa.

Junior tight end Hale Hentges, who steered away from controversy on Friday, continues to provide confidence toward his signal caller upon speaking to the press. Despite what may be viewed as a love-hate relationship between Hurts and some fans along with media, Hentges stands firm on this team following the lead of the native Texan in the College Football Playoff.

“What Jalen does for us, we really don’t care about what everyone else says,” Hentges said.

“The media, the fans, they can say whatever they want about Jalen, but we know what he does for our program. He is a fearless leader. He is our guy. He’s led us to many great wins and we are 100 percent behind him. He’s done a great job for our offense and will continue to do that.”

After catching three passes in Hurts’ freshman season in 2016, Hentges was solid contributor through 12 games – hauling in 73 receiving yards and three touchdowns from Hurts.

He has totaled 23 scores to just one interception, and anticipates leading Alabama to victory over Clemson in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2018 in New Orleans, La.
