Alabama CB could see a new position

Alabama cornerback Tony Brown enrolled as a five-star recruit in 2014. A native of Beaumont, Texas, he played in 13 games last season with starts against Florida and Ole Miss.

Brown recorded 10 total tackles and a pass breakup.

Regardless of his size (6-foot, 195 pounds) and ball skills, Brown has not been used much on defense this season.

The sophomore has 10 total tackles, but all have come on special teams.

With fellow corners Marlon Humphrey and Minkah Fitzpatrick both producing, there may not be enough room for Brown at the position. He’s been seeing reps at safety in the last couple of weeks during practice sessions.

Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has Brown on the team’s second dime package unit. His natural hard-hitting abilities and coverage skills could thrive at safety.

Alabama loses Cyrus Jones, Geno Matias-Smith, Jabriel Washington and Bradley Sylve to graduation and the NFL Draft after this season. Eddie Jackson, a junior, has a year of eligibility left but he’s steadily rising on NFL Draft boards.

Jackson leads the team interceptions (5) and interception return yards (230). He’s returned two interceptions for touchdowns. The Florida native was recruited as a cornerback in 2013. Jackson’s move to safety has been pivotal to Alabama’s success. Similar results could occur with Brown if a transition is made.
