Rookie defensive lineman Jarran Reed aides Seattle to victory over Atlanta

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Seahawks’ coach Pete Carroll is starting to reap the benefits from selecting defensive tackle Jarran Reed in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft. The former Alabama standout smothered the Atlanta Falcons’ run game on Sunday, holding both Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman to a combined 50 yards on 17 carries.

Reed collected three tackles, including one for a loss and a pivotal sack of Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan in a 26-24 win for Seattle. Reed, who played under Nick Saban in 2014-15, was one of multiple players that formed the student council last season. He anchored the Crimson Tide’s defense to a College Football Playoff national championship, posting 57 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack, two pass breakups and eight quarterback hurries.

The 6-foot-3, 311-pound interior lineman has 10 total tackles through five games.
