Bryce Young’s second season in the NFL is off to a disastrous start as the former No. 1 overall pick continued to struggle on Sunday during the Carolina Panthers’ 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Young completed 18-of-26 passes for just 84 yards and one interception as the offense put up an embarrassing 159 total yards. Through two games Young has been unable to pass for over 200 yards and has thrown three interceptions and no passing touchdowns.
However, even with the dismal offensive performance new head coach Dave Canales was clear that Young was to remain the team’s starting quarterback and get back to work in hopes of improving.
“Bryce is our quarterback,” Canales said. “We’re going to just continue to shore up and fix the things we need to fundamentally from a scheme standpoint, all those things. These are all valuable reps; these are all valuable games. We’ll learn a lot from this game, and, hopefully, we’ll take another step this week.”
It’s been far from the start Young and the Panthers had hoped to get off to after a 2-15 campaign the season prior where the former Alabama quarterback worked through a number of different offensive play-callers along with his turnover issues.
Now under Canales, Young’s growing pains have continued but has given full trust in the first-year head coach.
“I trust Coach’s game plan,” Young said about the number of checkdown passes against Los Angeles. “We just got to do a better job of executing it. Again, got all the faith in the world and coach and the stuff we’re putting in, stuff we’re calling. It’s just starts with me. Have to do a better job of executing, and then all of us as players, we have to do a better job.”
