Touchdown Alabama came up with five key questions heading into Alabama’s Week 11 matchup vs. LSU. Here’s a look at how the Crimson Tide answered those during its 20-9 victory over the Tigers.
Question: How will Alabama handle LSU’s new-look offense?
Answer: New playcaller, new quarterback, no problem. Alabama was ready for whatever LSU threw at it over the weekend.
With recently-fired head coach Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan out of the picture, tight ends coach Alex Atkins was promoted to play-calling duties over the weekend. The interim offensive coordinator didn’t have much success against Alabama’s defense, mustering up just 232 yards of total offense while failing to find the end zone.
Alabama chased LSU starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier out of the game by midway through the third quarter, limiting him to 121 yards on 18 of 21 passing. Backup quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. was able to move the ball better but completed just 5 of 11 passes for 52 yards while taking two sacks and giving up a fumble in the fourth quarter.
LSU managed just 59 yards on 26 rushing attempts. Most of that came on a 37-yard run by Harlem Berry in the second quarter. Aside from that big gain, the Tigers averaged just 0.88 yards per attempt.
“I told the guys, I think we’re playing as fast as we have played to this point in the season,” Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said. “I think the guys are playing with a good bit of confidence. They seem to really enjoy playing the game with each other. I think there’s a swagger and an energy that we’re playing with right now, and that needs to continue as we navigate through the regular season here.”
