Alabama football’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb discussed what he saw from Ty Simpson during an underwhelming performance against Eastern Illinois.
Simpson threw two interceptions during the Crimson Tide’s 56-0 win over the Panthers on Saturday, finishing the game without a passing touchdown and 147 passing yards after playing one half of the game. This performance came after Simpson threw an interception and fumbled the football against Oklahoma week earlier. The Alabama offensive coordinator gave his thoughts on the two interceptions Simpson threw on Monday.
“I think he had one that he wanted back,” Grubb said. “Obviously, the interception at the end of half shows the kind of player Ty is. He’s selfless, asking to put the ball up in a 50/50 situation. A guy who’s worried about stats wouldn’t have done that for the team. So, don’t worry about that one. The layered ball on the two throw, he needed just a little bit more air on it, honestly. He just underestimated how deep that guy was and Ty makes that throw as good as anybody.”
The Alabama signal caller also threw another pass in harm’s way before he threw his second interception of the game. He was targeting Lotzeir Brooks when the pass sailed past Brooks and hit an Eastern Illinois defender in his hands. Grubb also discussed this throw.
“He had one to Lottie in the middle, that’s correct,” Grubb said. “He had a sideline throw available there to Ryan that he could have made. A little bit of miscommunication between him and Lottie there. So, he definitely didn’t want to force that one on the inside.”
Simpson will look to get back on track against Auburn.
