A consistent observation being made by spectators and media members is that Ty Simpson and the Alabama offense have struggled to connect in the deep passing game lately.
People can debate what position group is responsible for the lack of production down the field, but the reality is that each position group has something they can do to help the offense move in the right direction.
Wideout Ryan Williams gave insight into how Alabama’s receiving core can help Ty Simpson in the passing game against Oklahoma next week.
“Really just allowing him to survey the defense, so getting lined up faster,” Williams said. “Like I said, allowing him to survey the defense, allowing him to make the checks that he needs to make and then making plays when he gives us the opportunity.”
Williams was asked about what he’s seen from Simpson over the last few weeks, and he included a statement in his answer that communicates he has all the trust in the first-year starter.
“Honestly, just resiliency,” Williams said. “Mentally, physically he’s just a guy. I wouldn’t rather have any other quarterback in the country.”
When a quarterback is in a bit of a rough patch, sometimes the people around them are just as responsible for building the quarterback’s confidence up as the quarterback is himself.
Against Oklahoma, the Alabama offense could prioritize getting the football out of Simpson’s hands quickly, and seeing the football caught a few times on the opening drive is something that Simpson might need in order to get his confidence back.
Williams has dropped a couple of key passes in key moments this season, including a potential touchdown grab in the fourth quarter of the SEC Championship. Germie Bernard also dropped a football that hit him in the chest in the end zone. There were also numerous drops from the running backs coming out of the backfield.
The skill players are going to play a critical role in the rematch against Oklahoma, and if the rumors of Simpson having some sort of undisclosed injury are true, then the players around him will need to step up even more to assist their quarterback.
